COMPOST
HELLAS O.E is on
Kefalonia. The company has been composting organic
wastes since 1999, when initiated a demonstration project
with the support of Mr. Tom Young manager of Ecological
Sciences Limited (Exeter, U.K) and the environmental non-profit
organization "Katelios Group Research/Protection of
the Marine and Terrestrial Life"( Kefalonia, Greece).
It has since demonstrated the viability of composting local
waste streams using "low cost" methods and
has undertaken crucial preliminary research into production
of compost from phanerogam sea grass (Posidonia oceanica),
agricultural and novel waste streams as olive oil and cheese
production waste.
COMPOST HELLAS O.E current
business utilizes an aerobic waste management methodology,
based on the formation of windrows with the base medium
of the compost being sea grass (Posidonia oceanica),
cleaned from Katelios Village tourist beach, with other
wastes coming from agricultural sources.
The final stable product,
organic compost ,is used:
As a natural fertilizer
and amendment for agriculture,
-
Releases nutrients,
which benefit plant growth, producing tastier crops
and healthier plants
-
Improves soil structure
and quality by opening up heavy soils making them easier
to work and improving lights soils by increasing moisture
content
-
Increases aeration in
soils
-
Improves plant performance
through vigorous root growth
-
As
a product of regeneration,
-
As a product against
soil erosion and exhaustion,
-
Suitable for reforestation.
The idea to produce natural
fertilizers using sea grass (Posidonia oceanica),
using composting methods is a unique innovation in
Greece and the owner of the company has received the related
Greek patent no. 1003611 (OBI).
COMPOST HELLAS O.E
is the only business in Kefalonia (and one of very few in
Greece) that is successfully producing a new industrial
and ecological product known as compost.
