About Compost Hellas
The idea
The company is composting organic wastes since 1999, when a pilot project of composting local organic matters (sea-grass, natural green organic waste) for the production of a natural compost was successfully initiated by the ecologist Katerina Xenopoulou in Kefalonia.
She came up with a pioneering idea to use posidonia to produce natural compost via a composting method.
The pilot program was implemented with the support of Mr. Tom Young, manager of Ecological Sciences Ltd (Exeter, U.K) and the cooperation on plant trials experiments of the Environmental NGO "Katelios Group for the Research and Protection of Marine and Terrestrial Life", Kefalonia, Greece
Our philosophy
Compost Hellas was founded in 2002 and introduced an optimal method for minimizing the impact of managing tourist beaches.
Our philosophy is based on the production and development of natural fertilizers at reasonable cost by regaining and utilizing only 'clean' organic materials. We offer quality improvement of agricultural, landscape and gardening products while protecting the environment.
We are focusing on the significant quality improvement of the organic, transitional (from conventional to organic) and conventional agriculture and gardening
Unique Greek Innovation
To produce natural fertilizers using sea grass Posidonia oceanic (using the dead leaves that are wash up in beaches), is a unique innovation in Greece and the president (Katerina Xenopoulou) of the company has received the related Greek patent no. 1003611 (OBI).
Method
Washed up leaves are collected with an environmental-friendly way (in order to protect the beach) from selected shores of Greece (Katelios in Kefalonia Island, Kyparisia bay and Marathon in Attica). The dead leaves of Posidonia oceanica make up 80% of the raw material used (through the open windrow composting process) for the production of POSIDONIA®.
